“Blue Monday” Is A Myth

Jan 18, 2016 | 12:48 PM

CALGARY – A common belief that the third Monday in January is the most depressing day of the year, has been de-bunked by the Canadian Mental Health Association.

“Blue Monday” actually started as a public relations stunt by travel agencies to sell more trips during the winter. It was calculated based on a false scientific equation, which apparently accounted for mutiple mood variables during this time of year.

The centre says there’s really a slight increase in suicide rates during warmer months. However, rates usually remain fairly consistent throughout the year.

It says that it’s easy to understand why this belief has been perpetuated. Many people have fallen into debt after the holidays, Seasonal Affective Disorder can start taking a toll on emotions among other factors that contribute to depression during winter months.

That being said, depression and suicide rates aren’t found to spike during January.

But no matter what time of year, if you or someone you know is feeling depressed or suicidal, you should find someone to talk to or contact a local crisis centre for more help.
