First Meeting as a New Police Commission

Jan 27, 2016 | 5:55 PM

LETHBRIDGE – The new Lethbridge Police Commission met for the first time in the new year.

Lee Cutforth was named Chair of the commission, and Peter Deys as Vice Chair.

The service also had three new members sworn in, and several new recruits honoured for the completion of their probation.

Police Chief, Rob Davis, is proud of the work they’ve done so far. “They were hired in May of 2014, went through their recruit training, and hit the streets in late 2014. By all accounts, if they’re the future of the organization, the organization’s in good hands. They’re all very swtiched on individuals, energetic, smart. Probably the most valuable asset they bring is common sense.”

A brief update about the station construction included that members will be able to use locker rooms by the end of the month. The underground parking structure has also been completed to park cruisers in. Overall, the project seems to be on time and on budget.

The change in the commission is also one of the last steps of pulling out of the regional service.

Davis says there’s still some rebranding to do in terms of logos, shoulder flashes and vehicles. However, the service received permission from the Solicitor General to make gradual changes over the course of two years.

He explained that as equipment and vehicles start to wear out, or through attrition, and they purchase new stuff… they’ll start to add new logos.

Ultimately, Davis says it was a financially responsible decision for the service.
