AHS Warn of Increased Norovirus Cases In Southern Alberta

LETHBRIDGE:  Alberta Health Services says there has been an increase of norovirus cases in Southern Alberta.

AHS recently sent a letter to schools in the region to create awareness for teachers, parents and students as they’ve seen a spike in gastrointestinal illness – with symptons such as vomiting and diarrhea.

AHS explains you can prevent the transition of virus by staying home if you’re sick, not preparing food for others, and consistenly washing your hands.

South Zone Medical Officer of Heath Dr. Vivien says the virus seems to rear its ugly head every two years.

However, she explains Suttorp says the norovirus isn’t notifiable – so they don’t know the extent of its presence in the community.

“Having said that, when we see increase in school absenteeism due to gastrointestinal symptons, when we see outbreaks in senior’s facilities, and we see increase in calls in Health Links, for example, then we know this organism is making its way around Alberta.”
