Sentencing Date Set for Former Teacher in Sexual Assault Case

Jan 29, 2016 | 1:27 PM

LETHBRIDGE: A two part sentencing hearing has been set for the former Raymond elementary school teacher, who admitted to a number of sex crimes involving children.

Jamey Brian Kristian pleaded guilty to charges of sexual assault, sexual interference, child pornography, and voyeurism last September.

Kristian was first charged in January of 2014, after one of his victim’s told his mother what had happened and they went to police. That led to additional charges involving two more boys, and police discovered that Kristian had also taken photos and videos of young boys in local change rooms.

As the court is still waiting for the completion of a psychological report for Kristian, it was noted that the best date for sentencing would be April 19. The Crown raised a concern though, as an individual who wants to read their victim impact statement in court, will be out of the country for several months at that point. They asked if the process could be split into two parts, with the single statement being entered at an earlier date.

An agent appearing for Kristian’s lawyer, Greg White, explained that White would not be available before April, and that Kristian did not want to proceed without his lawyer.

The judge adjourned the sentencing hearing to April 19, and the victim impact statement to March 4, saying he would leave it up to the sentencing judge whether or not it can be read in at that time.
