LETHBRIDGE: Officials in Lethbridge provided an update on the arrival of Syrian refugees Wednesday.

111 Government Sponsored refugees are on the ground in Lethbridge.

Immigrant Services Director Sarah Amies says they expect 144 government assisted refugees in Lethbridge by the end of February and anticipate 240 by the end of the year.

Amies explains they are still looking for volunteer support and have established a program where people can help in many different ways.

“Perhaps sitting in a doctor’s office or waiting for a doctor’s appointment, perhaps going grocery shopping with someone and supporting them through that. We also have a program that is entirely dedicated to the youth.”

65% of the Syrian families already in Lethbridge are school aged children.

Amies adds the youth are not in local schools yet but they could be soon.

There are also 35 privately sponsored refugees expected to be in the community by month’s end.
