LETHBRIDGE – The federal government is investing almost a million dollars to help drive innovation and profitability in the canola industry.

The funding of $980,000 through Growing Forward 2, will help support the canola industry’s new strategic plan, which is designed to improve canola yields to meet 26 million metric tonnes of global demand and increase yield to 52 bushels per acre by 2025.

Research will be conducted by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, in collaboration with the Canola Council of Canada. Scientists will look at disease management, stand establishment, and fertility management.

Canada’s canola sector contributes significantly to the country’s economy, with $7.4-billion in farm cash receipts and over $9-billion exports to places such as China, Japan, Mexico, and the United States.
