Locally Based Gas King Gets Behind Proposed Prepay Rules

LETHBRIDGE: The Alberta Association of Chiefs of Police (AACP) is calling on the province to introduce legislation, that would require motorists to prepay at the pump before fueling up.

The goal is to prevent gas-and-dash crimes, with the association making the push after a service station worker was hit and killed in Calgary last summer, when he tried to stop a fleeing vehicle.

Gas King President Brent Morris noted that gas-and-dash is a fairly common problem locally, and shared his thoughts on the proposal, “We would support it, we wouldn’t want to do it on our own of course, I don’t think customers would like it too much, but we would support it as long as everybody was doing it.

“The down side is it would be a bit of a hassle and learning curve for customers, because now they have to come in and pay for their fuel before,” continued Morris. “It wouldn’t be too bad though if there was a bit of a grace period to let people get used to it.”

Morris acknowledged that if everyone had to prepay, more people might simply pay at the pump and leave without coming into the store and potentially spending more money, but said that overall the positives would still outweigh the negatives.

The AACP says while the province has told them they will review the resolution, they haven’t given an indication on how or when it will happen yet.

The chiefs passed a similar resolution in 2011, but it wasn’t accepted by the former government.
