Privately Sponsored Syrian Refugees Quickly Settling In

LETHBRIDGE – Lethbridge has been nothing but helpful while welcoming privately sponsored Syrian refugees.

Private sponsorship spokesperson, Erin Phillips, says residents have been generous providing things like furniture and clothing as they settle into their new lives.

However, interacting with the family has been its own adventure. “I met this family. We’d helped them out with some things for their apartment. So, I picked up these things they needed and took them to the house. I put it in my Google Translate what it was I had, and the dad meets me at the door and his son comes to the door,” Phillips explained.

“He looked to be about 10 or 12. He shakes my hand and starts speaking to me in English! He starts translating for his parents after one week in school! I was absolutely amazed at this boy.”

She added that they’ve run into very few problems as of yet, saying the support from Lethbridge Family Services has been critical in addressing any issues that have arisen.

Mayor Chris Spearman has also been keeping in touch with both the federal and provinicial government.

He wants to maintain a good working partnership with municipalities to make the transition easier for all refugees.
