LETHBRIDGE:  Rachel Nicol of Lethbridge finished ahead of the pack Saturday in her 50-m Breaststroke victory at the Speedo Western Canadian Open Championships.

Nicol clocked 31.74 seconds for the victory as Calgary’s Fiona Doyle was second at 32.08 and Kelsey Wog of Winnipeg rounded out the top three with a time of 32.74.

Nicol also placed second in the 100-m breaststroke and came in with a bronze medal for 200-m breaststroke earlier in the event.

Nicol wasn’t the only local product to make it onto the podium. In men’s open competition, Lethbridge swimmers Ryan Thornley and Kaelan Freund both return home with bronze medals.

Thornley placed 3rd in both his 50-m backstroke and 200-m IM while Freund came in third in 50-m butterfly.

Thornley and Freund, alongside younger brother Joshua Freund, and teammate Christopher Alexander, also earned bronze for their team race in the 200-m Medley Relay on Sunday.

The Speedo Western Canadian Championships precedes the Olympic Trials in April.
