Council Support for Regional MRF Feasibility Study

LETHBRIDGE – After a Materials Recovery Facility was voted down for the city in late January, council will now be looking at one to be constructed for the region in Taber.

Taber Mayor, Hank De Vlieger, gave a presentation on Monday to discuss the option with council. He asked for support on a number of different areas to be able to move ahead with the facility. The proposal used much of the city’s information regarding the construction and operation.

As the facility needs at least ten tons per hour to be viable, municipalities from across Southern Alberta would have to work in partnership by committing their recyclables. Council voted that they wouldn’t commit Lethbridge’s recyclables as of yet, as they want to see what comes of the feasibility study first.

“On Friday (March 4), we had a mayor and reeve’s meeting, which was attended by most of the reeves and mayors from Southern Alberta. It looks like they had a very positive response to us,”  De Vlieger noted.

However, they did decide to unanimously support Taber’s application for the Alberta Community Partnership Intermunicipal Collaboration Grant, among other grants. It was also agreed that council will support the town as the applicant and managing partner, as well as support the feasibility study for Southern Alberta.

Mayor Chris Spearman will write the appropriate letter.

De Vlieger expressed that the study will be done as soon as possible so work can start on the facility quickly. The study will look at how transporting much it would cost to transport recyclables to another community, rather than building a MRF within Lethbridge.

He added that he will get back to council following the study to hopefully gain their final commitment.
