Project Budget Approved for New Middle School

LETHBRIDGE – Council has approved a $9.9-million project budget for the Waterbridge Middle School on the west side.

The money will be used for underground infrastructure, road and sports fields construction. The school is set to open in September 2018, at the intersection of Metis and Chinook Trail in the city’s southwest.

Councillor Ryan Parker noted in Monday’s meeting that there are currently two middle schools on the west side, which is not enough to keep up with current growth.

In order to fund the project, the city will borrow up to $8.2-million. It’ll also use funding from its residential subdivision operations.

Residential lots will be available in the Waterbridge community by 2019.The city’s loan will be paid off from those future sales.

At full build-out, the 263 hectare Waterbridge area will contain two new neighborhoods and be home to roughly 8,800 people.
