Syrian Families Settling Into Life in Lethbridge

Mar 10, 2016 | 10:51 AM

LETHBRIDGE – About 150 Syrian refugees have now settled in Lethbridge since January 1st. Another 100 are expected to arrive in the city by the end of the year.

Director of Lethbridge Family Services Immigrant Services Sarah Amies says the families are doing very well in their new surroundings.

“I’m seeing a lot of relaxation on faces. Faces that were so tight and so tense when they came off an airplane, so tired. Now they’ve been here for a couple of months, they’re getting a little bit used to the normal, they’re understanding that there is safety, that their children are going to be OK if they let them outside to play. I’m seeing people relax and that is huge,” she adds.

Amies also points out that of the group that first arrived, all the children are now in school and are really excited about it, as some of the kids have not attended school in three or four years.

The community has really stepped up to help the Syrians settle in. However, there’s still a need for volunteers. People are needed to sort through the community donations and guide the Syrians through the store space.
