LETHBRIDGE:  In less than two weeks the local Val Matteotti Goldenhawks went from being South Division Champions to Provincial Champions.

On March 9th, the Bantam AAA hockey team captured the AMBHL South Division Championship by defeating the Calgary Bisons in game five of the best of five series, which propelled the Hawks to the Provincials.

The first two games of the Provincial Championship were played in Sherwood Park last weekend.

The Goldenhawks shut out the Flyers 3-0 in the first game and took the second game 4-3 in over-time.

Games three and four moved to Nicholas Sheran arena in Lethbridge on Saturday and Sunday. However, the Hawks were able to wrap things up in the third game.  The Hawks and Flyers were tied 1-1 at the end of the first frame.  By the end of the 2nd, the Hawks were ahead 3-1.

The Flyers fought back in the third, scoring two goals.  However, the Goldenhawks persevered and downed the Flyers 4-3 to capture the Provincial Championship in three games.

The Hawks now move on to the Western Canada Bantam Championship. The round-robin tournament takes place in Okotoks beginning March 31st.

No Lethbridge team has won the Western Canada Championship since 1992.
