Hurricanes End Regular Season with 4-2 Loss and Prepare to Tackle Regina

LETHBRIDGE:   The Lethbridge Hurricanes finish off their regular season with a 4-2 loss in Medicine Hat and a record of 46-24-1-1.

Medicine Hat was first on the scoreboard and the Canes answered midway through the first, with a power-play goal from Jordy Bellerive, assisted by Arvin Atwal and Kord Pankewicz.

The first period ended with the Tigers ahead 2-1 and a total of 10 penalties split between the two teams. The period was barely underway when Canes D-man Darian Skeoch, picked up where he left off the evening before in Lethbridge, logging a 5-minute major for fighting and a 10 minute misconduct. Medicine Hat’s Nick Heid logged the same penalties.

The second period went by scoreless with one minor penalty.

Just over a minute into the third period, the Tigers netted their third goal. 

The Canes’ Arvin Atwal got the puck through the pipes at 3:50, assisted by Jordy Bellerive and Ryan Vandervlis. The Tigers were up 3-2 with less than 5 minutes left in the game when the Canes pulled goalie Jayden Sittler.

With less than a minute left on the clock, Medicine Hat’s Zach Fischer tallied an empty net goal, taking the score to 4-2. At the same time, the Canes’ Arvin Atwal was hit with a 10-minute misconduct.

The Hurricanes finish the regular season atop of the Central Division and with 94-points, in 4th place in the WHL, behind Victoria (106), Brandon (102) and Kelowna (100).

The Canes kick off the first round of the playoffs at the ENMAX Centre on March 25th, against the Regina Pats, with Game 2 set for March 26th. Both games will start at 7 p.m.

This is the first time since 2008-2009 that the Hurricanes will appear in the post season.
