Sentencing Adjourned in Sexual Assault Case

LETHBRIDGE: Sentencing for Darius Shawn Chief Body has been adjourned, to give the judge time to consider the recommendations made by the Crown and defence.

Following a trial in January, Chief Body was found guilty of sexually assaulting a 30-year old hearing impaired woman. The judge found that on March 28, 2013, the victim was jumped from behind by Chief Body and sexually assaulted.

He rejected Chief Body’s story that the victim had suggested sexual services for money, as her hearing-aid was no longer working, meaning she couldn’t have carried on a conversation in the dark with him.

Through a victim impact statement, which her mother read in court, she said she hasn’t felt safe since the attack and is afraid to even go out in public, adding, “I’ve basically become a hermit.” She also noted that she lives in constant fear that he will come after her again.
