LETHBRIDGE:   The last time Picture Butte High School won the Girls 2A Provincial Basketball Championships none of the current Sugar Queens team was even born yet. In fact, there’s a good chance a few of their parents aren’t old enough to remember that gold-medal winning squad either.

Saturday the host Sugar Queens won their first 2A gold medal in 34 years with a 58-51 win over Lacombe’s Central Alberta Christian Knights before a packed gymnasium.

Although PBHS won silver as recently as 2013-14, the last gold medal came in 1981-82. That victory actually capped quite a run for the school, which earned gold in 1975-76, 1976-77 and 1979-80.

This year’s gold medal edition of the Sugar Queens opened with a 59-42 win over Pigeon Lake and then beat Hanna’s J.C. Charyk  54-29 in the semi-finals. The team had finished second in the South Zone championships.

The bronze medal this year went to the J.C. Charyk Hawks after a 58-41 win over La Crete Lady Lancers.

Coaldale’s Kate Andrews High School Pride, meanwhile, lost its opener 44-36 to J.C. Charyk and then were beaten 61-50 by Pigeon Lake.

In 2A Boys Provincial Basketball action, Palliser Regional Schools had a pair of squads competing in La Crete.

Calgary’s Heritage Christian Academy Hawks earned bronze with an 81-74 win over the Assumption Crusaders. The team opened the tournament with an 87-83 win over the host Lancers, before losing to West Island College 99-70.

Kate Andrews High School Pride opened with a 64-60 lost to J.C. Charyk, before bouncing back with a 71-58 win over the Tofield Titans and then a 73-49 win over the Holy Redeemer Rebels.
