MEDICINE HAT:  Canada’s largest oil sands producer is looking into building several green energy projects in southeastern Alberta.

Suncor is in the very preliminary development stage of three proposed solar projects

– The Schuler project would be located in Cypress County (NE of Medicine Hat).

– The Forty Mile project would be located in the Bow Island area.

– The Hand Hills project would be located in the Delia area east of Drumheller.

There are also two potential wind projects, one at Hand Hills the other at Forty Mile

CHAT News asked Suncor if they had an estimate for how many construction and permanent jobs the solar and wind projects would generate.

In a statement from Suncor, a representative said “As we’re in the very preliminary stages it’s too early to define the actual size of the projects and the potential job opportunities.”

The company is currently working with the provincial government on an application process to build the five different projects.

The proposed wind farms at Hand Hills and Forty Mile are expected to generate 280 MW of power, enough to power 100,000 homes.

The proposed solar projects could generate around 240 MW, enough to power 70,000 homes.
