OKOTOKS:    The Val Matteotti Golden Hawks team members are wearing another medal – the third in less than a month.    On Sunday, the team captured Bronze at the Western Canada Bantam AAA Championship.

On March 9th, the Bantam AAA hockey team captured the AMBHL South Division Championship by defeating the Calgary Bisons in game five of the best of five series, which propelled the Hawks to the Provincials.

On March 19th, at Nicolas Sheran arena, the Hawks captured the Provincial Championship, after taking the first three games of a best of five, from the Sherwood Park Flyers

The Hawks then moved on to the Western Canada Bantam Championship round-robin tournament in Okotoks this past weekend.

The tournament features 13 and 14-year-old players from Western Canada, with five teams, representing all four western provinces.  The round-robin format saw the top teams advance to the medal rounds on Sunday.

Two teams represented. The Lethbridge Val Matteotti Golden Hawks and the host Rocky Mountain Raiders.

Other teams representing their respective provinces were the Winnipeg Monarchs (Manitoba), Yorkton Xerox Terriers (Saskatchewan) and the Burnaby Winter Club (BC).

The final match-ups saw the Burnaby Winter Club down the Rocky Mountain Raiders 3-2 in the Gold Medal Game.

The Bronze medal game pitched the Golden Hawks against the Winnipeg Monarchs. The two teams played a scoreless first period. A goal by Dylan Nevil in the second had the Hawks up 1-0 going into the third, where the Monarchs put one between the pipes to tie the game, which went into overtime.

Ridly Greig had the winner in over-time, lifting the Golden Hawks to a 2-1 decision over the Monarchs for the bronze medal.
