LETHBRIDGE – The first commercial businesses in the Crossings development are expected to open soon.

Eight buildings are currently under construction in the area and they should all be complete by the July long weekend.

No Frills by Loblaws and their gas station, along with Tim Hortons are expected to be the first businesses to open in the next couple months.

Vice-President at Royop Development Corporation, Jeremy Thal, says this 100,000 square foot space is just the beginning, as the long term vision of the area is a 10 year project.

“This first phase is more of your community, grocery, drug store anchored service type tenants. We’re still looking for local entrepreneurs like the dentists and medical and optometrist and veterinarian to step up, because that’s what completes these exciting developments,” explains Thal.

He adds the remaining 400,000 square feet that will be built in the area over the next decade will include big box stores and medium sized tenants, which will create excitement and buzz for the whole city.

This first phase is also set to include Original Joe’s, Boston Pizza, Subway, Liquor Depot, Rexall Drugs, a Vietnamese restaurant, and a restaurant franchise called Freshii. These businesses are expected to be open by November 1, 2016.

With all the construction taking place in the Crossings area, Thal doesn’t think there’s a better site in western Canada with the Crossings Leisure Complex, two high schools, a public library, sports fields, and residential homes popping up nearby.

He points out they are working to create a very pedestrian friendly commercial site, where people can get out and enjoy the area on foot or with a bicycle.
