LETHBRIDGE – Organizers of Lethbridge’s 2015 Alberta 55 Plus Winter Games gave back to the community Monday, after recording a profit of $91,644.74.

As part of their original funding agreement, $25,000 will go to the City of Lethbridge. The city provided $150,000 in financial and in-kind contributions to support the games.

After that, the Lethbridge Senior Citizens’ Organization, Nord-Bridge Seniors Centre, Lethbridge Masters Swimming Club and the Lethbridge Seniors Curling Club were given legacy funding.

Games Chair, Lea Switzer, talks about how they selected the recipients, “We wanted to give legacy money to, first of all, focus on 55 plus individuals, we wanted to, if possible, focus on groups that did not have sustained municipal or provincial funding, we wanted to focus on groups that had a part in the games themselves.”

While $25,000 comes from Alberta Sport to help with the creation of a legacy fund, Switzer pointed out that the credit needs to go to those who helped put the event on, “It’s really a statement of the perseverance and the ability of the directors in their different portfolios during the games, to be able to keep their costs down, because we found that in the beginning when we first started the process of going through the games, the economy was not hot.”

The games, which ran from February 19 to 22, 2015, also helped contribute over $800,000 to the local economy.
