LETHBRIDGE – Sentencing arguments got underway on Tuesday in a sexual assault and child pornography case against a former Raymond elementary school teacher.

Jamey Brian Kristian pleaded guilty back in September, admitting to sexually assaulting three boys and taking photos and videos of other young boys in local change rooms.

The crown is seeking 15 years in prison, along with a DNA order, entry on the sex offender registry for life, a no contact order with the victims , and a weapons prohibition.

Two additional victim impact statements were read in court on Tuesday.

A young victim faced Kristian to say his “childhood innocence was taken” by this abuse. He lives with “fear and depression” and has isolated himself as he can’t trust people anymore. The boy’s mother also spoke and said her life will never be the same, outlining how she also has difficulty trusting people and forming relationships.

Kristian addressed the court through tears on Tuesday as well, to say he is truly sorry for the pain and suffering he has caused to his victims, their families and the community in general. He said he has made “some very bad decisions” and hopes he can get the help that he needs.

The defence is expected to make their sentencing submissions on Wednesday morning.

An agreed statement of facts was presented in this case back in September. It revealed that Kristian met one of the boys, who was just 9 in 2005, through Big Brothers Big Sisters. He only volunteered with the organization for about six months, but continued the relationship afterwards. It was then in 2007 that he started to engage in various sexual acts with the boy, and kept a journal detailing what he did. The sexual assaults continued until 2012.

He became a mentor to the second boy, also 9, and also started acting as a babysitter for the child. He sexually assaulted that victim during the summer of 2013.

The other case involved Kristian taking sexually explicit photos of a 10-year old boy while he slept.

During a search of Kristian’s home and electronics, police discovered that Kristian took a number of photos of young boys in change rooms at Nicholas Sheran and Stan Siwik pools, along with a third unidentified location, without the boys knowledge. They also found that Kristian had obtained more child pornography on the internet.
