LETHBRIDGE – A sentence was handed down on Thursday afternoon for three girls who admitted to torturing an 18-year-old woman in August of 2014.

21-year-old Chanel Umpherville, 24-year-old Cherise Bruno, and 26-year-old Samantha Oldenburger had previously pleaded guilty to charges that include assault causing bodily harm, unlawful confinement and uttering threats.

On Thursday, a judge sentenced each girl to one year in jail, followed by two years probation. They are not to have any contact with the victim or her family and were each given a weapons prohibition.

During the offense, the victim was lured to a rural property and viciously beaten over the course of several hours. She had to be hospitalized with extensive, but non-life threatening injuries, including bruising to most of her body. It was noted that the crime was Bruno’s idea, as she felt the victim had slighted her.
