LETHBRIDGE – Several Lethbridge families were treated to a free trip to the dentist as part of National Oral Health Month on Tuesday.

Hall Dental partnered with Lethbridge Family Services to provide free check-ups for participating families as part of their “Give Back, Smile Back” program, as well as a free oral care kit.

Dr. Paul Hall, general dentist with Hall Dental, says that oral health is more than just fixing teeth, but a reflection on overall health.

“Oral health is just not only fixing tea th together, but it is a true part or window to the rest of the body,” he said. “And the healthier our teeth and gums are makes a difference in the overall health of the person.”

According to a 2014 report from the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, close to six million Canadians avoid going to the dentist due to costs.

The study estimates 32 per cent of Canadians have no dental insurance, with that number jumping to 53 per cent in Canadians aged 60 to 79.

Dr. Hall funds the costs of the check-ups through his practice, with items for the care kits coming from donations by his suppliers.

“I’m very privileged and honoured to be able to provide the care,” he said. “It’s something that makes me feel really good inside.”

One of those being treated was a local immigrant, Tamar Mahamad.

Through a translator, he said that though he hasn’t been to a dentist, he wasn’t scared of seeing one.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to have this service here,” Mahamad said. “I’m hoping I can get some fillings and cleaning done today.”
