LETHBRIDGE – Although running for the top position was never her intention, Allison Pike has been named the new president of the Alberta School Council’s Association (ASCA).

Pike, who initially planned on running for vice-president was given the president position at the ASCA conference last month in Edmonton.

Schools are represented either in person or by proxy.
The Lethbridge contingent was the largest one ever sent to an ASCA annual general meeting in Pike’s experience.

Pike said she used an interesting campaign strategy where she placed a dot on the name tags of the people she spoke with at the conference.

Those dots simulated discussion and represented one of her campaign themes of connecting the dots from around the province.

Pike admitted that her new job title will benefit the Lethbridge community and ensure that the area has a voice and that that voice is heard.

“My short term goals are really to get ASCA board members out and connecting with other board members, so we ensure that we are the voice of parents,” she said.

Pike said that she has seen an increase in parents’ participation and the value of their voice on council.

Pike added generally, parental involvement is strong for school councils at the elementary level, though interest tends to decline at the middle school and high school levels.

Pike will sit in on the Alberta General Meeting and listen to the approximately 1,250 school councils’ resolutions.

These resolutions will build policy for the ASCA to oversea.

Hollie Rotheisler Tarasewich from Lethbridge also became an elected Board member for ASCA.
