Birds-Eye View of Fort McMurray Fire

May 4, 2016 | 1:33 AM

FORT MCMURRAY: Pilot and former Lethbridge resident Alex Guilbert was in Fort McMurray when the fire encroached the city. He was at the airport when the evacuation notice went out and was not able to get across the city to help his girlfriend, Courtney, evacuate their home and get pets to safety.

By early evening, his girlfriend was able to leave by car, with the family pets and whatever she could get out of the home by herself. She headed south to Edmonton.

Alex remained on standby at the Fort McMurray airport. By late evening word came that the fire was now moving toward the airport and a decision was made to start moving out some of the aircraft. At 11:30, Alex piloted an aircraft out of Fort McMurray headed for a temporary resting point at Villenueve airport outside of Edmonton.
