Palliser Regional Schools expecting budget shortfall for 2016-17 school year

LETHBRIDGE – Growing staff costs are the leading driver behind a $1.5-million shortfall for the Palliser Regional Schools next school year.

Yearly benchmark increases for teachers are expected to grow by $700,000, while inflation is adding another $100,000 to costs.

Other unfunded costs include $400,000 for technology upgrades and a funding decrease of $300,000 due to declining enrollment. An independent review of the Palliser organization also has a budget of $75,000.

The incoming carbon tax is expected to cost the district $20,000 in fuel with no projected costs for heating and electricity available.
