LETHBRIDGE – There will be two new bronze statues outside of the Galt Museum in September 2017, but you might not be able to put a face to a name.

If this is the case, you’re not alone.

Susan Boroughs Johnson, Executive Director of the Galt Museum, said that the archives became concerned after they learned that many in Lethbridge didn’t know who the Galt’s were, despite multiple public spaces named after the family.

“Alexander Galt was an important man, he brought in a lot of businesses and stood up for the rights of minority religions,” she said.

Alexander’s son, Elliot Galt, was also involved in the development of coal mining, railways and irrigation.

Boroughs Johnson said the new statues will be used as a way to inform the public on the history of a family instrumental to confederation.

The statue comes as the country celebrates the 150th anniversary of Confederation.

A committee reviewed submissions from artist Robert Dey and fund-raised through the museum for the project.
