Lethbridge YWCA hopes car-living marathon raises awareness and cash

LETHBRIDGE – The Lethbridge YWCA is turning to a unique fundraising event to help raise funds for housing programs.

No Fixed Address is a 15 hour live-in-your-car-a-thon that raises money similarly to a walk-a-thon.

The difference is participants must live in their cars during the time frame, much like many homeless must do.

Jennifer Lepko, CEO of the Lethbridge YWCA, said the idea is to show what it’s like to have to live in a vehicle when you don’t have a home.

“I think that’s one thing that we don’t realize that it’s not all it’s cut out to be,” she said. “I mean you don’t have a washroom, you don’t have a couch or chairs. It’s not a comfortable place to be.”

A recent report by Social Housing in Action showed that one in five homeless in Lethbridge are youth under 24 years old.

No Fixed Address runs from 6 p.m. on Friday to 9 a.m. on Saturday in the South Parking Lot of Exhibition Park.

Lepko said that while they ecourage all participants to spend the full 15 hours in their cars, they know that it’s not always possible.
