Mayor Spearman Discusses City Plans to Help Fort McMurray

May 20, 2016 | 11:26 AM

LETHBRIDGE – With a conditional timeline in place for Fort McMurray residents to return to the community, the City of Lethbridge is standing by to offer additional support.

Mayor Chris Spearman stated that certain city staff are just waiting on provincial coordinators to give them the go-ahead.

“I think there will be some going up to help operationally with things like getting their water systems going and sewer systems and things like that,” explained Spearman.

Spearman also went over the contributions city staff have already made since the wildfire forced people from their homes in the community.

“We’ve sent people into the Provincial Operating Centre, the POC, and they’ve been assisting with logistics and getting people to this point in terms of the fire supression and the resources that are needed,” noted Spearman.

“In terms of fire supression, we did have about 20 people involved in various levels and in terms of the social service support as well.”

About 60 families and 200 people from Fort McMurray are currently staying in Lethbridge.
