DRUMHELLER – It’s already recognized globally as a premier research and education centre, but the Royal Tyrell Museum hopes to encourage visitors to learn more with new expansions.

The Government of Alberta is funding the $9.3-million major expansion through its Capital Plan 2016, which will include adding more learning spaces, accessible washrooms, a hands-on discovery room and family rest area.

The museum’s new “Foundations” exhibit will give the public an interactive experience, exploring the basics of palaeontology, geology, evolution, fossilization and the history of life.

“When we build, renew and maintain infrastructure such as the Royal Tyrell, our economy gets a needed boost. Investing in infrastructure also supports jobs and strengthens Alberta’s communities,” noted Brian Mason, Minister of Infrastructure.

The Royal Tyrell Museum is a key heritage tourism attraction, with more than 12-million visitors since it opened in 1985, and economic driver. It also houses one of the world’s largest dinosaur displays, and is the only Canadian museum dedicated entirely to palaeontology.

Construction should begin in spring 2017, and be wrapped up by spring 2019. The museum will be open to the public throughout.
