LETHBRIDGE –The University of Lethbridge held a ground breaking ceremony on Thursday celebrating the launch of the biggest construction project in the university’s history.

The Destination Project sees the creation of a 36,000-square-metre science and academic building, purposed to meet increasing enrollment demand.

The building will boost capacity in science programs, making room for 450 new science students.

The government has committed $248 million to the Destination Project over the next five years.

During the ceremony, Kainaiwa elders blessed the project with songs and a sweet grass burning and local MLA’s and representatives of the University of Lethbridge spoke towards academic and community benefits for southern Alberta.

Mike Mahon, UofL President, said that the new building will have a positive social impact as it will act as a science centre for community groups and grade schools.

“This building is hugely needed for student recruitment and for the university to be able to recruit the best young scientists. Having state of the art facility is a huge part of retaining good faculty,” he said.

Marlin Schmidt, Minister of Advanced Education stressed the government’s investment in the future of education in the province.

“The Destination Project will not only provide access to world-class programming and learning opportunities for students, but it will also help encourage growth and economic diversification in southern Alberta by capitalizing on the research and innovation taking place at the University of Lethbridge,” he said.

The facility is scheduled to open to students and faculty in the fall of 2019.
