LETHRBIDGE:  At the 2016 Canadian Championships and Rio Selection trials this past weekend, current and former Pronghorns returned with four medals and excellent results.

After meeting the Olympic ‘A’ standard in May, former Pronghorn Heather Steacy solidified her place on the Canadian Olympic team, winning her third Canadian Championship in Edmonton. Steacy moved into the gold medal position on her second to last throw with an event winning toss of 69.71 metres. She also the earned National titles in 2011 and 2012.

In her first meet of the season earlier in May, Steacy threw a near personal best of 72.09 to hit the Olympic ‘A’ standard.

As a Pronghorn, Steacy won four Canada West titles, two CIS gold medals, a CIS silver and a CIS bronze medal in her four-year university career. Steacy was also the first CIS woman to eclipse the 20 metre mark in the weight throw.

Rio will be Steacy’s second Olympic Games, qualifying for London in 2012.

Two-time CIS triple jump champion Aaron Hernandez claimed his second consecutive Canadian Championship with a furthest jump of 15.26 metres. The Olympic standard for Rio is 16.85 metres.

Hernandez won his first national title with a jump of 14.98 and represented Canada at the Pan Am Games in Toronto.

Sandra Latrace continued her stellar season, earning a Junior Canadian Championship in the long jump and a silver medal in the 100 metres. Latrace leaped 6.08 metres to win her first outdoor national title and narrowly missed double gold, finishing second by three 1/100ths of a second in the junior division of the 100 metres.

Latrace burst on to the university track scene last season, being named the CIS and Canada West Rookie of the Year, while claiming gold medals at both the conference and national meets in the long jump. She also earned silver medals in both events in the triple jump.

Defending CIS Shot Put Champion Peter Millman finished fifth this past weekend in the shot put with a furthest throw of 17.23 metres. Millman will return to the Pronghorns for his fifth and final season next fall.

Rounding out the results of current Pronghorns, female thrower Laura Roth finished fifth in the women’s hammer qualifying round and was 10th in the shot put.
