Increased Safety Inspections During Summer Construction Season

Jul 20, 2016 | 10:03 AM

ALBERTA – Residential construction workers can expect more safety inspections during the busy summer construction season.

Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) officers will be increasing inspections on work-sites over weekends and other periods outside regular working hours to ensure safety remains a priority throughout the busy construction months.

Angela Zuba, CEO CHBA Lethbridge, said that she welcomes the inspections, as increasing safety measures will help lessen serious accidents.

“It’s very important that we monitor safety at all times but especially in with the longer summer hours, construction workers are working past typical 9-5 hours. Having inspections more frequently encourages young workers to become more aware of their surroundings and follow their employer’s work safe practices.”

Between April 1, 2015 and March 31, 2016, OHS officers issued 1,605 orders on residential construction work-sites.

More than half were related to fall protection, a statistic that has remained constant over the past two years.

Zuba added that fall protection is typically the highest offending incident because of the numerous tools used to curb incidents such as: knowing how fall protection should be worn, understanding when it should be worn and applying the best practices for it.

All members of the CHBA in Lethbridge region are required to be a certified provincial safety membership.

This requirement has been in place since 2010.
