Short Court Case for City Man Charged with Extortion

Jul 22, 2016 | 1:34 PM

LETHBRIDGE:   A 22-year-old CITY man has been sentenced to 30 months is prison after trying to extort money from a north side senior.

On the morning of June 21st, police responded to a report that an unknown person had left a letter at the home of a 69-year-old woman.  The note demanded $7500 in cash to pay an outstanding debt her deceased husband supposedly owed.

The letter contained a deadline with specific instructions not to involve police and where to leave money. It went on to threaten that if the victim did not comply there would be negative consequences for her and her family.

After conducting a sting operation, in which the suspect attended the victim’s vehicle to retrieve a decoy envelope, the suspect was arrested.

An investigation confirmed there was no debt owed to anyone by the victim’s late husband.

In Lethbridge court on Thursday, Andrew Jordan Geall pleaded guilty to one count of extortion. He received a 30-month prison term, with credit for 45-days of pre-trial custody.  He was also fined $200 and was given a life-time firearm prohibition.
