EDMONTON: The Alberta government has announced it will start sending money to Fort McMurray to help the municipality cover some of its costs from the devastating wildfire in May.

The province says it will provide an advance of $87 million to the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo to help with uninsurable expenses.

Those include emergency response, evacuation, cleanup of damaged areas and public spaces and repairs to public infrastructure damaged by the wildfire.

The advance will cover about half of those costs. The municipality estimates the total tab for its response to be about $175 million.
