Summer of 2016 Will be Remembered as One of the Stormiest on the Canadian Prairies

Ottawa:  After five decades on the job veteran climatologist David Phillips says the 2016 weather season won’t be fondly remembered by those who live on the Prairies, especially Albertans.

Environment Canada’s senior climatologist says the number of tornadoes, hail storms, thunderstorms and other extreme weather events are up in all three Prairie provinces.

Phillips points to the Alberta oilsands capital Fort McMurray, where residents had just returned following a massive wildfire, only to be hit by flooding on the weekend when more than a month’s worth of rain fell in two hours.

As well, received 206 mm of rain last month — the most since 1927 and there were 19 thunderstorms on top of it.
