Canada loses 31,200 jobs in July; Alberta Hardest Hit
CANADA – The Canadian labour market lost 31,200 net jobs last month as the country experienced the biggest monthly drop in full-time work in nearly five years. The jobless rate inched up to 6.9 per cent in July from 6.8 in June.
The pain was particularly harsh in Alberta, which posted the highest jobless increase, moving from 7.9 in June to 8.6 in July. Alberta’s jobless rate in July of 2015 was 6.2 per cent.
Regionally, Lethbridge – Medicine Hat has the lowest rate in the province as the rate jumped from 7.3 to 7.6 per cent. However, in July of last year, the region’s rate sat at an even four per cent.
Statistics Canada’s latest labour force survey says the market shed 71,400 full-time positions in July a number partly offset by an increase of 40,200 in less-desirable, part-time jobs.
