Tour of Alberta 2016 Road Closures in Lethbridge for Wednesday and Thursday

LETHBRIDGE –  The route for the Lethbridge stage of the Tour of Alberta 2016 was annnounced in mid June and require temporary closure of some roadways in Lethbridge.

The race – which will be televised in 161 countries – will see 120 elite cyclists from around the world travel 107-km, doing nine laps of a circuit that begins and ends at Galt Gardens on September 1.

It will get underway at 5 pm at Galt Gardens on Thrusday (September 1st), with competitors going north on Scenic Drive to Peenaquim Park and then back out of the river valley to return downtown. It’s expected to end between 7-8 pm.

A festival will also be taking place on race day at Galt Gardens. It will feature activities for children, stage performances, a beer garden, vendor booths and a stage with a big screen where you can watch the race live as it goes through the city.

To allow time for setup of the start/finish, festival and international media centre, certain roads in the downtown area will close on Wednesday (August 31) evening. These areas are:

— 3rd Ave S from 5th St S to 7th St S (7 p.m. closure)
— 6th St S from the alley  to 3rd Ave S (7 p.m. closure)
— 5th St S from 1st Ave S to 3rd Ave S (11 p.m. closure)
— 2nd Ave S from 7th St S to 8th St S (11 p.m. closure)
— 2nd Ave from 4th St S to 5th St S (11 p.m. closure)
— 7th St from 1st Ave S to 3rd Ave S (11 p.m. closure)

The remainder of the route will close down at 3:30 p.m. on race day, September 1st, and will remain closed until the race has finished, at approximately 8 p.m.

The following intersections will be available for crossing the route during road closures (subject to change; please note that Transit busses and Access-A-Ride white vans will have priority in crossing intersections):

— 4th Ave S at 5 St St S
— 4th Ave S at 7th St S
— Scenic Drive at 2nd Ave S
— Scenic Drive at 1st Ave S

The intersection at Scenic Dr and 3rd Ave S will remain partially open throughout the race to permit traffic to and from the river valley.

Along with watching the action live, spectators can follow the race on their smartphones with a Tour Tracker App.

The app can be downloaded by Android and Apple device users; a web-based version is also available.     

Prior to the event, the app shows course previews and team rosters, and during the event, app users can watch live video coverage, GPS tracking and text commentary.

Post-race, the Tour Track App posts results, standings and summaries in real-time
