Defence Launches Charter Application Over Delay in Getting to Trial

Sep 19, 2016 | 12:38 PM

LETHBRIDGE – A trial that was set to begin Monday morning (Sept. 19) will instead have to wait until January, if it goes ahead at all.

Last week, Vincent William Boutcher’s lawyer launched a charter application, saying the two years it took to reach the trial was unreasonable.

Boutcher was charged after an incident on August 7, 2014, when a 50-year old man sitting in a chair at his campsite was hit by a vehicle, resulting in serious injuries.

An investigation determined the driver and victim were known to each other, and on August 13, 2014 Vincent William Boutcher attended the police station where he was taken into custody. He was then charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, dangerous driving causing bodily harm and criminal negligence causing bodily harm.
