LETHBRIDGE – It’s been a very good start to the school year for the 11 colleges in Alberta, including Lethbridge College.

All of them have seen an increase in enrolment in academic programming, with a trend towards business and business administration, health and human service programs, university transfer programs and upgrading.

First year enrolment at Lethbridge College for 2016-17 is at 2,484, up 15-per cent from last year. Overall the number of students at the college reached a 10 year high this fall, with an eight per cent increase to 4,492.

First Nations, Metis and Inuit students helped grow those numbers with an 11-per cent jump in enrolment.

“I think part of it is the economy,” stated Lethbridge College President, Paula Burns. “But I also think its part people just understanding sort of the value of a college education, and really what they can get by coming for a one or a two year program and really being job ready right as soon as they graduate.”

“All of our academic centres and all program areas are really experiencing growth, but I think I’m pretty excited about the growth in the business school,” Burns continued. “I think that’s an area where they have been a little bit progressive in trying to make sure students have the opportunity to take classes at different times.”

The biggest increase this year at Lethbridge College came in Geomatics Engineering Technology, which spiked 69-per cent over last year. Conservation Enforcement – Bachelor of Applied Science (33-per cent) and Business Administration (30-per cent) were the other programs at the college to see significant gains.
