No Charges to Come After Investigation into Anti-Semitic Facebook Post

Sep 28, 2016 | 12:54 PM

LETHBRIDGE – An investigation into an anti-Semitic image and comment that was posted on a Lethbridge man’s Facebook page will not result in criminal charges.

The material – which was posted by a third party to the individual’s page – was first reported to Calgary Police as a hate crime in late August and passed on to Lethbridge Police on September 8. It included an image of an Orthodox Jew being assaulted and a very anti-Semitic comment.

The post was removed from the Facebook account after a short period of time and later deleted by the person who posted it.

In a media release from the Lethbridge Police Service, they state:

Investigation determined the post, while extremely offensive and inappropriate, does not meet the threshold for intent set out in the Criminal Code of Canada for advocating genocide or public incitement of hatred.

As the investigation has concluded, police say no further information will be released.
