Murder Charge Could be Downgraded for Woman Accused of Killing Mother

Oct 6, 2016 | 2:40 PM

LETHBRIDGE – It’s anticipated that a charge of second degree murder will be replaced by the lesser charge of manslaughter, for a Lethbridge woman accused of killing her mother.

The lawyer representing Jessica Lee Ann Praill stated in court Thursday (Oct. 6) morning that they intend to replace the current charge, however she needs more time to discuss the change with her client before proceeding.

Around 9:40-pm on April 28, 2016, Lethbridge Police were called to a report that a 54-year old woman, identified as Shelley Kristine Praill, had been stabbed at a home along the 2300 block of 18 Street North. She was found inside the home and sent to the Chinook Regional Hospital with life threatening injuries. She died a short time later in hospital.

Praill was arrested at the scene without incident and charged with second degree murder.

Police say their investigation shows the victim had been involved in an argument that resulted in her being stabbed.

The reduced charge of manslaughter has already been added to Praill’s case, and it’s expected the second degree murder charge will be withdrawn when the matter returns to court November 4.
