LETHBRIDGE – A new funding agreement has been announced to provide 29 local students with paid internships to gain experience with technology and digital skills.

On Oct. 7, Lethbridge Community Network announced that it has signed an agreement for the youth internships in technology and digital skill roles throughout Alberta with Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada.

The partnership comes from the federal government’s Youth Employment Strategy’s Career Focus stream.

The $325,000 in funding will be handed over to employers in exchange for the design and application of internships that will help young people develop skills and benefit from work experience.

“The youth demographic learns what is the next, best technology and application,” said Alan Schneider, LCN’s executive director in a news release. “We want to continue pushing the envelope on what youth can bring to organizations from a technology bent.”

The 29 intern positions are based on 600 hours of work, with the hosting organizations being eligible to receive up to $15 per hour to subsidize the intern wages.

Interns and organizations interested in participating in the 2016-2017 Youth Internship program are encouraged to contact the Lethbridge Community Network office in Lethbridge or visit YouthInternships.ca for application forms.
