ALBERTA – A local feedlot operator has been inducted into the Alberta Agriculture Hall of Fame.

Cornelius (Cor) Van Raay was recognized for helping to mould modern day feedlots through his operation near Iron Springs.

The province noted that after starting with only 50 cattle, Van Raay turned his feedlot into one of the largest in Canada. As an early adopter of technology he focused on developing unprecedented operational efficiencies in large-scale feedlot operations, while also maintaining sound environmental and animal handling techniques.

Van Raay was also credited with helping to launch a number of agri-businesses that include Butte Grain Merchants Ltd., Western Tractor, Van Raay Land Inc., and Sungold Specialty Meats Ltd.

His work to develop and grow the future of the industry was another factor in his induction. A major financial gift was used to start the Cor Van Raay Southern Alberta Agribusiness Program at the University of Lethbridge and Lethbridge College in 2014.

The hall of fame was created in 1951 to recognize individuals who have made a significant contribution to the agriculture industry and the development of rural life. Since then 130 Albertans have been added to the hall.

Dr. John Kennelly and Robert Prestage joined Van Raay as inductees at this year’s ceremony in Leduc.
