Prime Minister welcomed warmly by Blood Reserve

STAND OFF – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was met with cheers from a large crowd as he made a visit to the Blood Reserve on Friday.

He’s been in the province since Thursday (Oct. 13) promoting Liberal candidate for the Medicine Hat – Cardston – Warner riding, Stan Sakamoto (pictured above).

However, Prime Minister Trudeau was able to meet with the Indigenous community in Stand Off, and discuss a number of important topics with Blood Tribe Chief and Council.

“Our issues are not about complaining, are not about hand outs. We have some positive successes,” said Chief Charles Weasel Head.

“We want to reiterate to him that we have solutions, not only for the Blood Tribe but throughout the country. It’s important for the Prime Minister to understand Indigenous people and how we do business.”

Chief Weasel Head explained that council was able to speak about the importance of education, funding post-secondary learning and supporting child welfare. He noted that there’s still a way to go, but council will continue working with influential people and leaders to find effective solutions.

Trudeau later made some brief comments to the residents that gathered at the Saipoyi Elementary School, commending them all for getting involved in their community.

He was then given some gifts on behalf of the Blood Tribe Council, and made time to meet with residents personally and snap some photos.

Chief Weasel Head expressed his most sincere gratitude to Prime Minister Trudeau for visiting his community.

“It’s so good for our people to have that first-hand experience. It just truly inspires our people. I think, as a result of that, you’re going to see more involvement with our people getting interested in politics.”
