Poll: Two-thirds of Albertans oppose carbon tax

LETHBRIDGE — A newly-released opinion poll finds two out of three Albertans are against Premier Rachel Notley’s plans for a carbon tax.

The latest numbers from the Alberta Public Opinion Study conducted by students at Lethbridge College found 53 per cent strongly opposed to the carbon tax, and another 15 per cent somewhat opposed. On the other side, 19 per cent were somewhat supportive and only 14 per cent strongly in favour.

The result appears to follow party lines. 79 per cent of people who said they vote NDP agree with the plan, and 55 per cent of Liberal voters. 88 per cent of Wildrose supporters and 82 per cent of Tory backers are agains the tax.

Opposition leads in all regions, most strongly so in the south, at 74 per cent.

In terms of education, opposition is highest among those with trade, technical school, or college diplomas, at 75 per cent. It’s 74 per cent among those wtih the least formal education. University graduates are opposed to the tune of 56 per cent.

Students in the Citizen Society Research Lab surveyed 1,513 adults in Alberta by phone during the first week of October. The margin of error is +/- 2.5 percentage points 19 times out of 20.
