Delay in case for man charged in violent sexual assault

Nov 3, 2016 | 12:18 PM

LETHBRIDGE – The case against 20-year old Denzel Dre Colton Bird has been delayed, as his lawyer works out a potential conflict.

Greg White withdrew as council Thursday (Nov. 3) morning because of the issue, which he couldn’t divulge, but stated that he is very confident he will retake the case when the matter is sorted out next week.

The case had originally been set for today for a bail hearing for Bird – who faces charges of attempted murder, aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault with a weapon, aggravated assault, and break and enter – but it will now have to wait until everything has been cleared up.

According to the Lethbridge Police Service investigation, the 25-year-old woman was walking to work when she was struck with a weapon, dragged into the alley off 6 Avenue South and sexually assaulted on the morning of September 30, 2016. They also noted that the victim and the accused do not know each other and that this was a random attack.

Updates from the family on social media say the victim – who has been in a Calgary hospital since the attack – is showing signs of improvement, making the comment, “[She] is beginning to communicate more consistently, making gestures, nodding and some words.”

The matter is back in court next Thursday (Nov. 10).
