Rallies pushing government to address questions, lack of support around carbon tax

Nov 4, 2016 | 11:47 AM

LETHBRIDGE – A province-wide rally will be urging the Alberta Government to re-think its approach to the carbon tax on Saturday (Nov. 5).

Lethbridge will join Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, Camrose, Drayton Valley, Edmonton, Hanna, Red Deer, Airdrie, Calgary and Brooks in the respectful demonstration.

The event is being used to drum up support for a petition requesting a plebsicite on the legislation that’s set to take effect on January 1, 2017. It’s an issue the ralliers feel will have a largely negative impact on investments, consumer confidence and jobs not only in Alberta, but across Canada.

“To use our Premier’s words to her NDP supporters, they believe they’re right, we’re wrong and nothing’s going to stop them. It seems a very heavy-handed position,” said Davey Wiggers, Lethbridge rally organizer.

“We’re not against the environment. We’re not extremists. We’re reasonable people, but when we have questions, we expect them to be answered.”

All 11 rallies encourage every Albertan and political party to join in and provide other issues that affect their region, as well. Wiggers would like to see at least 10,000 people turn out across the province.

The Lethbridge group will meet in Galt Gardens at noon on November 5. It will feature speeches from Cardston – Taber – Warner MLA Grant Hunter and other local stakeholders.

Wiggers wants everyone to have their voice heard.

“They don’t have the support of most Albertans, as they claim. That’s why we need to stand together and make it be known that they do not have our support in this, and that they should put forth a plebiscite and get that mandate. If they’re so certain that they have our support, then that should not be an issue at all.”
