Council reduces contribution to university anniversary celebration

Nov 14, 2016 | 4:49 PM

LETHBRIDGE – The University of Lethbridge has received a reduced amount of funding from the City to host it’s 50th anniversary “Let it Shine on” festival.

The original ask was $120,000 to purchase a protective tarp for the community stadium field, portable tents, additional electrical services, inflatable rentals, tables and chairs, transportation to and from the stadium and university parking lots and to alter the stadium’s fencing for more space. Council decided at the October 31 meeting to postpone a decision for two weeks.

With a vote of 6-2, that was reduced to $50,000 from the Major Community Event Hosting grant, and doesn’t cover the remaining $70,000 that some council members considered to be capital expenses.

“The majority felt that this should be an application through the capital improvement process,” noted Mayor Chris Spearman. “I think the university didn’t think three years ago of this project, and now we’re only opening up the capital improvement process again in the spring. I doubt that there’s an opportunity to apply for the $70,000 at that time.”

Councillor Jeff Carlson did propose a motion to provide the remaining money through council contingencies, but that was defeated, 3-5.

Ryan Parker added that it would set a bad precedent to fund things that aren’t in line with the Major Community Event Hosting grant, with Rob Miyashiro countering that it will have an impact on some of the free events that were to be part of the year long celebration.

Regardless, Mayor Spearman says it’s important that council continues to partner and celebrate with the university.

“We’re very proud of the University of Lethbridge… The establishment of the university in a city of less than 100,000 people has made a huge difference to the city. So, we want to be part of the celebration of 50 years.”

The “Let it Shine On” music festival will run September 2-5.
