Yates renewal pushed ahead of schedule with new funding

LETHBRIDGE – The Yates Memorial Centre will see some of its renovations much sooner than expected.

On Monday (Nov. 14), Lethbridge city council approved an amendment to the current Capital Improvement Program for the renewal project after receiving $3.5-million from the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund.

The following five projects, that weren’t scheduled to be complete until 2021, have now been bumped up to take full advantage of the new federal funding:

– elevator additions,
– Sterndale theatre barrier free washroom upgrades,
– concrete floor under the auditorium,
– signage, and
– air handing system revisions.

Some work has already started at the Yates, and it is anticipated to close between September 2107 and April 2018 to complete renovations in the theatre. The new estimated cost is set at $13.4-million.

“This facility is a valued part of our community. It’s a place to gather with our friends and family and be entertained and inspired by the performing arts. Enhancing this space is a huge asset to our city,” said Mayor Chris Spearman.

The building was constructed in 1966, with Lethbridge Musical Theatre, New West Theatre, numerous school performances and dance festivals still calling it home. The Sterndale Bennett Theatre was later added in 1990.
